DeWitt Clinton (March 2, 1769 – February 11, 1828) was an American politician and naturalist who served as a United States Senator, Mayor of New York City and sixth Governor of New York. In this last capacity, he was largely responsible for the construction of the Erie Canal. Clinton was a major candidate for the American presidency in the election of 1812, challenging incumbent James Madison. John Hoskins Griscom received his M.D. Degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1832. Following graduation he was appointed Assistant Physician of the New York Dispensary, becoming physician in 1834. From 1836 to 1840 he held the position of Professor of Chemistry at the New York College of Pharmacy.
